Shatabhisha translates to a hundred flowers or healers. This nakshatra is ruled by the deity Varuna and associated with the planet Rahu. Varuna is the lord of ocean waters. The symbol of this nakshatra depicts the lord of cosmic water Varuna holding a pot in his hands, the pot contains nectar or Amrit which can lead to immortality. It is considered that Varuna is a god who knows the secret of immortality. This nakshatra is also associated with healing and science. Once sage Kashyap was performing a great sacrifice but he was not getting a suitable cow for his yagna. So he stole a cow named Kamadhenu from the cattle shed of Varuna. His two wives concealed the cow as the sage performed his yagna. Angered by this Varuna immediately came and demanded his cows back. Sage Kashyap refused to give the cow back to him. Angered by this Varuna cursed Kashyap that he will be confined as the cows and as the cattle are in distress, his wife will lose her children. Varuna went to Bramha and talked about them. Bramha ordered the sage to return the cattle but the sage denied it, furious about this Bramha too spelled curse upon them. Later, the sage was born as Vasudeva and his wife as Devaki and Rohini.
