The meaning of Punarvasu is “The return of the Light.” The deity associated with this nakshatra is Aditi. She is the mother of devas. Shri Ram was born when the Moon was transiting the nakshatra of Punarvasu. According to Ramayana, Shri Rama went to exile with his wife and brother Laxman. He wandered in the forest living a simple life and protecting the forest from demons. One day one of the demons named Surpanakha tried to seduce Ram and this made Laxman angry who ended up cutting the ears and the nose of this demon. This led to a chain of events where Ravana upon hearing Surpanakha’s insult tried to take revenge and felt attracted to Sita. Ravana kidnaped Sita and there was a huge war between Ram and Ravana that took place. Ram ultimately killed Ravana and brought back Sita.
