The primary goddess associated with the nakshatra of Mrigashira is Devi Parvati (Shiva’s beloved wife). According to Hindu mythology, Devi Parvati married Shiva going against the will of her father Daksha. Daksha was against the marriage of Shiva and Parvati. Daksha arranged for a grand yagna and decided to invite everyone except Shiva and Parvati.

Parvati was deeply hurt after knowing this, she insisted Shiva go to the yagna along with her. Shiva denied going but allowed Parvati to visit her father. Daksha insulted Parvati and her beloved husband Shiva which made her take her own life. Angered by his wife’s death Shiva decided to destroy the yagna. To escape from the hands of shiva the yagna took the shape of a deer and flew into the sky. Shiva finally killed the yagna and its deer head got established among the star as Mrigashira nakshatra.
