The Sanskrit word Rud means To Shed Tears, to Cry, or to How. The nakshatra of Ardra is associates with crying or howling. It can also be seen as ‘the one who howls’ or ‘the one who roars. The god associated with the nakshatra of Ardra is Rudra. The Rudra avatar is the fiercest form of Shiva. He is the god of lightning and thunderstorm and is also the god of wild animals. Rudra was born as half male and half female which reflects the duality of this nakshatra which further resembles the duality of the sign of Gemini.

Rudra had no name when he was born. During Samundra Manthan, Shiva took the entire poison churned by the ocean and kept it in his throat.
